Abstract:

The migration of children, especially youth, has become a common phenomenon in recent years, leading to significant emotional challenges for elderly parents left behind. This study aims to examine the emotional challenges faced by elderly parents due to the migration of their children and explore the impact of this migration on their physical and mental well-being. The data needed for the study were collected from a sample of 100 elderly parents in Kerala through a well-structured questionnaire and analysed using various statistical tools such as simple percentage analysis, chi square test and Friedman ranking test. The findings reveal that loneliness, reduced interaction, and weakened family bonds are the primary emotional challenges faced by elderly parents. Additionally, the absence of children leads to anxiety, insecurity, and, in some cases, physical and mental health issues. The study emphasizes the need for emotional support, regular communication, and community engagement to improve the well-being of elderly parents. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and social support organizations to develop better resources and strategies to assist elderly parents in coping with the emotional impacts of children’s migration.
