Threads of identity: Exploring traditional dress weaving in the Darlong community of Tripura

Author(s):

H Theresa Darlong

Abstract:

The Darlong community of Tripura, a sub-tribe of the Kuki-Chin ethnic group, is well known for its rich cultural legacy, which is best expressed via traditional garment weaving. The article provides a summary of the background, cultural significance, and current trends of Darlong Weaving. Traditional textiles not only provide practical clothing but also function as markers of identity, social standing, and artistic expression. The Darlongs' close ties to their forebears are emphasized by the variety of motifs, patterns, colours, and distinctive weaving techniques. However, it is vulnerable to failure due to modernization, shifting economies, and declining interest among younger generations. The article also discusses the efforts made by regional artisans, cultural establishments, and governmental bodies to promote and revitalize traditional weaving. This study also highlights the importance of indigenous textile traditions as a layer of cultural heritage that is essential to the preservation of ancient traditions. This paper delves into the history and significance of the Darlong Puan, along with its intricate designs, vibrant colours, and the techniques behind it that have been handed down through generations. That narrative runs strongly through the craft, as the craftspeople explain how the craft is so entwined with the tribe's cultural expressions, rituals, and storytelling. Such a rich heritage comes with layers of complexities; the author elaborates on why this tradition has struggled to continue in today's world but stresses the need for cultural conservation for sustainability in practice. Additionally, the study may also address the issues of globalization, and modernization, along with the waning of the indigenous practices, and offer suggestions for preserving and perpetuating this indigenous art within contemporary communities.
