Ideology on Campus: A Sociological Analysis of Marxist Education and Cultural Conflict in Universities

Author(s):

Radha Mishra

Abstract:

This paper investigates how Marxist ideas circulate in contemporary universities and how they interact with competing ideologies to generate cultural conflict on campus. Drawing on neo-Marxist theory, critical pedagogy, and recent episodes of student activism—including the 2024-25 wave of pro-Palestinian encampments in the United States and elsewhere—this study combines documentary analysis with qualitative case studies to trace the mechanisms through which universities reproduce, negotiate, and contest class-based world-views. Findings suggest that (1) curricular content and hidden curricula continue to transmit elements of Marxist critique, especially in the humanities and social sciences; (2) administrative and state actors increasingly counter these critiques via regulatory, financial, and disciplinary tools; and (3) cultural flashpoints emerge where questions of political economy intersect with identity politics, immigration policy, and academic freedom. The paper concludes by outlining the implications for scholarly autonomy, democratic deliberation, and the sociology of knowledge.
