Between risk and romance: The new landscape of intimacy in late modernity

Author(s):

Soumen Das

Abstract:

This paper explores the transformation of love and intimacy within the context of reflexive modernity, drawing primarily on the sociological theories of Anthony Giddens, Ulrich Beck, and Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim. Giddens’ conception of late modernity as a “runaway world” is marked by the processes of distanciation, disembedding, and reflexivity, which have radically reshaped self-identity and intimate life. Through concepts such as pure relationship, confluent love, and plastic sexuality, Giddens highlights the detraditionalization of intimacy and the democratization of personal relations based on equality, autonomy, and mutual satisfaction. However, Beck and Beck-Gernsheim extend and critique Giddens by emphasizing the paradoxes of individualization in the risk society where expanding personal freedom coexists with heightened uncertainty, instability, and emotional strain. Their notion of the “normal chaos of love” encapsulates the tension between the pursuit of personal fulfilment and the fragility of emotional bonds in late modernity. Using a theoretical and interpretive approach, this paper argues that reflexive modernity transforms love from a traditional, enduring institution into a self-project shaped by choice, risk, and negotiation. In doing so, it situates love as both a site of liberation and anxiety in the global age.
