Author(s):

Laxmi Priya Rabha

Abstract:

The traditional dress and ornaments of the Rabha community are important symbols of their identity, culture, and way of life. This research paper focuses on documenting and analysing the various types of clothing and jewellery worn by Rabha men and women. Based on field observations, photo analysis, and oral knowledge shared by community members, the study records the names, types, and descriptions of these traditional items. The research aims to preserve this rich cultural heritage and highlight its importance in the face of growing modernization and cultural change. For Rabha women, garments such as the Kambung (upper garment), Rwpham Dukri (lower garment), and Khosini Khodabang (head wrap) are commonly worn, along with a wide range of ornaments including Hancha, Siki Chuti, Chondro Chuti, Rubuk, Tora, and Chela. Rabha men traditionally wear the Pajar, Jiginata Pajal, San Khore, and Khopong, along with ornaments like Musa ni Nambri and San Gogreng. The study also compares these elements with existing literature and finds some similarities, while also contributing new details not often documented in earlier works. By presenting these findings, the paper helps in preserving the traditional knowledge of the Rabha people. It also encourages cultural pride and raises awareness about the importance of safeguarding indigenous practices. Overall, this paper serves both academic and community purposes, helping to keep Rabha traditions alive for future generations.
